MORE ABOUT SKETCH

The competition and touring exhibition SKETCH, aims to promote the diversity and importance of drawing and the role of the sketchbook in contemporary creative practice.

SKETCH is not intended to be a survey of the sketchbook, but a to generate creative impetus and provide a forum for debate. The sketchbook is a place  for impossible experiments alongside the ordinary and the observed. Viewing them can be a journey through the most intimate studio space of the artist.

“The handling of a sketchbook takes us to the heart of the space inhabited by the artist - The turning of a page brings a flow of ideas: fragments of images to come, references to places visited, experiences absorbed and thoughts provoked. It is a unique and privileged position, the prospect excites and the time spent rewards.” Meryl Setchel Ainslie

In 2005, Meryl Ainslie, founder and director of Rabley Drawing Centre in Wiltshire launched the SKETCH Open Sketchbook Drawing Prize. SKETCH is the UK’s only art prize for artist’s sketchbooks with a dedicated touring sketchbook exhibition.

This year we are really delighted to be working with Parker Harris, one of the leading visual arts consultancies in the UK. Parker Harris specialise in the delivery of visual arts projects spanning all disciplines and applications will be made using their online portal. More information about Parker Harris on their website http://parkerharris.co.uk/.

Meg Buick reviews her SKETCH award

"The Rabley Sketch Student Prize gave me the opportunity to work in the Drawing and Printmaking department of Plymouth College of Art. As well a bursary to buy materials and the chance to develop my work in the printmaking studio, I was also able to build a connection with the students and tutors on the Painting, Drawing and Printmaking BA course. I spent several visits developing a series of monotypes, and also began teaching workshops to the students. One of the best outcomes of the residency has been the experience of teaching on the course, and this has become a long-term collaboration - I continue to teach at Plymouth as a visiting lecturer. The prize gave me the encouragement and opportunity to continue developing my practice, and in December I will have a solo show at Mercer Chance Gallery in Hoxton, London – details will soon be on my website www.megbuick.co.uk"
