Through Process to Image: developing observational drawings into mixed media works on paper
with Sue Preston
  Sue Preston Sketchbook Drawing
Course Outline:
Using a variety of drawing materials and beginning by working in sketchbooks, students will make studies in the environs of Rabley. Later in the workshop further drawings will explore mark making and combining motifs from these studies which will form the basis of a series of works on paper made with a variety of water based media - ink, pastels, paint.  An intuitive response to the surfaces - or ‘accidents’ - created by the working process plays an important part in the development of the work. Sue encourages you to develop rich layered works on paper that enable the discovery of a hinterland between drawing and painting.

Students have a dedicated workspace in the drawing studio and access to the surrounding landscape of a 700-acre working farm set in the Marlborough Downs.

Basic materials
Group and individual tuition

“Sue is a true inspiration - and things that she said still play through my mind (eg ‘lose it, find it, lose it’.... ‘What happens when…’ ). Please tell her what a great influence she has been” SG
Rabley Drawing Centre located on the Ainslie family arable and dairy farm in the heart of the Marlborough Downs, Wiltshire. ‘Home Farm’ is a higher-level conservation farm with extensive meadow, wild bird feeding areas and special habitats and woodland. This unique environment includes ancient burial mounds, Iron Age earthworks and the Roman road to the Roman settlement of Cunetio.

The centre occupies a series of spacious Victorian red brick barns that now provide a beautiful gallery, drawing studio and well-equipped print room.

On site is the celebrated 21st Century farmhouse built by the Ainslie family, as featured on Channel 4’s Grand Designs.

This unique creative hub is in the middle of nowhere but the centre of everything! Only 1 hour from Oxford, Bath, Bristol, Winchester and Reading, and 1 hour 15mins on the train from London.
