Japanese Woodblock Workshop with Motoharu Asaka
Japanese Master Woodblock Workshop
with Motoharu Asaka
Course Outline:

Motoharu Asaka is one a a few master printmakers currently practicing in Japan. This is a unique opportunity to take part in a one day workshop including the a talk by Asaka about his work, see him demonstrate printing of Hokusai’s famous ‘Wave’, try making a traditional japanese print yourself and view the wonderful traditional Japanese prints that he has worked on.

Activities included in the workshop:

  • Demonstration of the last 5 stages of printing the Hokusai’s wave. Asaka will bring his plates for the famous “The Great Wave Off Kanagawa” which he carved in reproduction of Hokusai’s original.
    He will demonstrate the printing of the final plates
    The full breakdown of printed stages will also be available for viewing.
  • Print postcard sized prints from Asaka’s blocks. For those who want just a small taster of the printing technique, this short workshop uses postcard-sized blocks, carved by Asaka, featuring traditional ukiyoe motifs.
  • Demonstration of different types of ukiyoe gradient, non-traditional techniques. Asaka will demonstrate various special printing techniques for gradient printing etc and invite attendees to try the various techniques using his pre-prepared blocks.
  • Portfolio viewing of Japanese woodblock prints from Asaka’s extensive collection including master print by Utagawa Hiroshima and Katsushika Hokusai The experience of seeing/touching hand-printed water-based ink woodblock prints is very different from the images seen in books or on the web. The prints become beautiful objects in themselves and the mastery of the techniques can be fully appreciated. A rare opportunity to touch these prints first hand.

Materials - Basic Materials are supplied. Additional specialist materials are available at cost.
Please Bring:
Participants will need to bring a packed lunch. Tea and coffee is provided.
Spacious Studio plus well equipped print room. You will be working on location within the 700 acres of farmland surrounding Rabley Drawing Centre.
About Rabley Drawing Centre
Rabley Drawing Centre is located on the Ainslie family arable and dairy farm in the heart of the Marlborough Downs, Wiltshire. The farm is a higher-level conservation farm with extensive meadow, wild bird feeding areas and special habitats and woodland. This unique environment includes ancient burial mounds, Iron Age earthworks and the Roman road to the Roman settlement of Cunetio. Rabley Drawing Centre occupies a series of spacious Victorian red brick barns that now provide a beautiful gallery, drawing studio and well-equipped print room.
