Drawn to Landscape - Drawing and Printmaking Course
Drawn to Landscape
Drawing, ink and wash, monotype
with Emma Stibbon RA
Course Outline:
Emma Stibbon will introduce the historical and contemporary context for pictorial landscape traditions. Take in the drama of the Wiltshire Downs or the looming structures of our woodland. You will work outside and in the studio to create large-scale responses to place and environment using monochromatic media in drawing, ink and wash and monotype printmaking. This is a unique opportunity to work with this celebrated artist who is an enthusiastic and encouraging teacher.

The course is individually tailored and is most suitable for those with some experience and interested in working in the landscape tradition. You will receive individual and group tuition.
About the Artist:
Landscape is a central concern in Emma Stibbon's practice. Often working from places that put a perspective on the viewer, her work considers environments that are in a condition of flux or change. As an artist working primarily in drawing and print, she sets out to explore whether drawing can present a visual space for reflection and engagement with contemporary issues of transition and change in our surroundings.
Emma's practice emerges through gathering research 'in the field', observing through drawing, the camera and moving image. This is supported by dialogue with scientists, glaciologists, historians and archivists, and intensive periods of bringing this together in the studio. The work that emerges is part document/part fiction.
Her current research project considers the significant retreat that has now been observed in the ice shelves and glaciers of the Polar Regions. Recording has always been an important part of Polar Science; most pre-photography expeditions would have included an artist. Her project proposes whether there is a valid role for the contemporary artist as explorer and witness.
