Experimental Drawing Summer School
with Meryl Ainslie and Nik Pollard
 
Course Outline:
Meryl Ainslie MA will lead this Experimental Drawing Summer School week. It is a great opportunity to get out and about, find new ‘ways of seeing’ and seek fresh inspiration. Over four days of experimental drawing, preparing multi - sensory sketchbooks, a facinating visit to the Pitt Rivers Museum, Oxford, working in the landscape to make a 360 degree panoramic landscsape sketchbook taking in the far reaching views of from one of Wiltshires most beautiful vistas. Meryl will be joined on day 3 by Nik Pollard RCA who will bring his specialist natural history knowledge to an 'up close' micro landscape sketchbook session on Cherhill Downs. We will use a multi –sensory approach to challenge our perceptions of object, place and space, developing your ideas in the drawing studio.

A multi-disciplinary approach to drawing underpins Meryl Ainslie’s practice. She will encourage the investigation of drawing as a direct and indirect language, its role as a fine art discipline and mode to the development of other works.

The course is individually tailored and therefore suitable for beginners and for those with experience. You will receive individual and group tuition.
 
Day 1
Sketchbook workshop x 2 multi-sensory workshops
Preparation of colour, surfaces and collage
Short talk with examples of combining collage and drawing, Preparation of sketchbook for day 2
 
Day 2
Leave for Oxford, Pitt Rivers Museum
‘Collecting a sketchbook of objects’
Picnic lunch in the park, sketchbook sharing and discussion
about Pitt Rivers Museum – filling in the gaps!
Visit Ashmolean Museum
 
Day 3
Review of first 2 days with Nik Pollard and Meryl Ainslie. Preperation for two drawing workshop on Cherhill Downs. Split into two groups. Micro Landscape with Nik Pollard - looking up close to the landscape and its flora and fauna. Panoramic sketchbook taking in the 360 degree view with Meryl Ainslie. Using experimental methods to record your expereince developed in the first two days.
 
Day 4
Drawing Large. Two workshops to develop scale and pull together elements of your drawings from the first 3 days. Pulling your imagery together and review at the end of the afternoon.
 
 
Course includes:
Materials - Basic Materials are supplied. Transport during the course is included. Additional specialist materials are available at cost.
 
Facilities:
Spacious Studio plus well equipped print room, art library. You will be working on location within the 700 acres of farmland surrounding Rabley Drawing Centre. Making visits to Oxford and Cherhill Downs to make site specific work.
 
 
About the Artist:

Meryl AInslie - A multi-disciplinary approach to drawing underpins Meryl Ainslie’s sculptural installations and printmaking activity and she will encourage the investigation of drawing as a direct and indirect language, its role as a fine art discipline and mode to the development of other works. Meryl studied MA Fine Art: Drawing at Wimbledon School of art and has been the director of Rabley Drawing Centre for 10 years.

Nik Pollard MA RCA was Rabley Drawing Centre’s artist in residence 2014. He is a fine artist and illustrator specialising in natural history. Working in the field is key to his practice. His fluid and vibrant drawings are underpinned by an extensive knowledge of nature’s flora and fauna. Alongside his experience as a tutor he will bring to light elements of the countryside that will excite and intrigue.

 
 
Rabley Drawing Centre is located on the Ainslie family arable and dairy farm in the heart of the Marlborough Downs, Wiltshire. The farm is a higher-level conservation farm with extensive meadow, wild bird feeding areas and special habitats and woodland. This unique environment includes ancient burial mounds, Iron Age earthworks and the Roman road to the Roman settlement of Cunetio. Rabley Drawing Centre occupies a series of spacious Victorian red brick barns that now provide a beautiful gallery, drawing studio and well-equipped print room.
The centre offers short courses and termly studio and print sessions for developing artists from all creative fields. Exceptional artist - tutors offer professional and encouraging tuition in small groups.
